Unison support

1st May 2026

Conor McCarthy and Kevin Hillick, Unison representatives, along with several other representatives from the Down Education Branch of Unison, showed their strong commitment to supporting both the staff, families and pupils of our school in a fun, meaningful, and memorable way. Their visit was not only about creating an enjoyable day for everyone involved, but also about raising awareness and demonstrating solidarity in the fight to save our rural school, St Malachy’s.

Unison generously organised and funded a range of activities and treats to ensure the day was special for all. This included bouncy castles, which brought huge excitement and laughter, party bags for every pupil, refreshments for staff and families, and the funding of a raffle with the fantastic prize of an overnight hotel break. These thoughtful gestures reflected Unison’s genuine support for our school community and their wider campaign highlighting the importance and value of rural schools.

Throughout the event, the Unison representatives took the time to speak with children, staff, and families, listening to concerns, offering encouragement, and reinforcing their commitment to our cause. Their presence, positivity, and, indeed, the sunshine they seemed to bring with them created a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere.

The children thoroughly enjoyed multiple sessions on the bouncy castles and were delighted with the refreshments and treat bags at the end of the day. We are extremely grateful to Unison for standing alongside us, supporting our school so generously, and for helping to make such a joyful day while continuing to champion the vital role of rural schools like St Malachy’s.
