International day of play

11th Jun 2026

Today at St Malachy’s, we were delighted to celebrate the International Day of Play, recognising how vital play is for every child’s happiness, wellbeing and development. This special day is closely linked to Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which highlights that every child has the right to rest, leisure and to engage in play and recreational activities. The number 31 is therefore very significant, reminding us of this important right and the responsibility we all share in protecting it.

Play is not just about fun—it is essential for children’s physical, social and emotional growth. Through play, children develop friendships, build confidence, explore creativity and learn important life skills such as sharing, problem-solving and communication. It provides them with the time and space to relax, express themselves and simply enjoy being children.

At St Malachy’s, we are proud to ensure that all of our pupils experience a wide variety of play opportunities every day. Our children benefit from an array of engaging play experiences across different areas of the school, both indoors and outdoors. To mark today’s celebrations, the children enjoyed extra play time, giving them even more opportunities to explore, create and have fun with their friends. A highlight of the day was when the pupils in primary 1&2 worked together to create a giant number 31 using loose parts, linking their play directly to the important message behind Article 31.

Overall, it was a very special day filled with laughter, creativity and joy, as the children created lots of playful moments and happy memories. Celebrating together reinforced our commitment to providing a nurturing, playful and enriching environment where every child’s right to play is valued and supported.
