Exploring volume in P1&2

5th Mar 2026

Our Foundation Stage pupils have been fully immersed in exploring volume through water play this week as part of our maths topic work. The children experimented with a wide range of containers — tall, short, wide, narrow — and investigated how much each one could hold. They practised careful pouring, filling to different levels, comparing capacities, and predicting which container might hold more or less.

Through hands-on exploration, they discovered how water behaves, how volume changes with shape and size, and how to use mathematical language such as ‘full’, ‘empty’, ‘half-full’, ‘more than’ and ‘less than’. The children were deeply engaged, curious, and eager to test out their ideas. A wonderful blend of play, problem-solving and early mathematical thinking as well as some mopping up skills. 💦💦💦
