St Malachy's Primary School, Kilclief, Downpatrick

P1/P2

Welcome to our P1/P2 page

Teacher: Mrs Emer McVeigh

Classroom Assistant: Mrs Loretta McMullan and Ms Martina Turnbull

Primary 1 and 2 focuses on the whole child and involves the development of a love of language, talking, listening and interacting with one another.  The development of their self-esteem and confidence is key to their development.

Our priority curriculum areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Linguistic Phonics
  • Numeracy
  • Learning Through Play

The quality of our Foundation curriculum has been highlighted by the District Inspector as being ‘Very Good’.

The curriculum is based on topic-based learning.  Our topics run over a 2-year period and include the following:

  • Ourselves
  • Houses and homes
  • Toys
  • The big freeze
  • Under the sea
  • Transport
  • Animals
  • Garden and growth
  • Farming and food

We are currently part of the Getting Ready to Learn project which is initiated by Education Authority to help children settle in school at home and improve progress and emotions in the Early Years.

Once a month we have a visit from Elaine and Mini the Monkey from Mini's Music for rhyme, song and dance activities.
